Jackpot 2000 in Norwegian kiosks
Gambling.com's Swedish review of the game states that Jackpot 6000 was released in December 2007 and is based on Jackpot 2000, "a physical machine that used to stand in Norwegian kiosks and shops" (our translation).
We looked for an official record, from NetEnt or a Norwegian public source we could open and check, that names Jackpot 2000 as the model for the online game. We did not find one. So we present the link as a widely reported claim, not a confirmed fact, and we do not publish details about the original machine, such as its maker, stakes or prizes, that we cannot verify.
What is well documented is the setting. Gaming machines were big business in Norway before 2007. In a 2006 parliamentary committee report, several members pointed out that income from gambling had for many years been a significant source of money for Norway's voluntary organisations. A 2007 report notes that turnover on the machines fell by several billion kroner when banknotes were banned from them.
Norway's 2007 slot machine ban
Norway did not ban its gaming machines overnight. The parliamentary papers from the 2006–2007 session describe the steps:
- 2003: the Storting (Norway's parliament) decided that the existing machines should be removed and replaced by gaming run by Norsk Tipping, with an exclusive right. Putting this into effect was delayed while the case went before the EFTA Court, which the Norwegian state went on to win.
- 1 July 2006: a ban on using banknotes in gaming machines took effect. The committee wrote that experience so far suggested the measure had worked as intended.
- 1 July 2007: the existing machines were to be removed before this date, with no permits extended beyond it, and a machine-free period ran from 1 July to 31 December 2007.
- 2008 onwards: Norsk Tipping prepared its own machines, though the first were not expected to be in place before 2008.
The machines were controversial: the 2007 committee report records that 209 mayors had signed an appeal against gaming machines. None of the parliamentary pages we used names Jackpot 2000 or any other machine model.
NetEnt's Jackpot 6000 (24 Dec 2007)
NetEnt released Jackpot 6000 on 24 December 2007, in the middle of Norway's machine-free period. NetEnt has not said whether the timing was planned, and we do not claim a connection beyond the dates.
The game itself is documented in full on NetEnt's page: three reels and three rows, five fixed paylines, Jokers, a heads-or-tails double-up after a win, and Supermeter mode, in which each spin costs 20 coins and random jackpots are possible. NetEnt lists an RTP of up to 98.9%, a 10% hit frequency and a maximum payout of 600 times the bet. Some websites give 2011 or 2014 as the release year; NetEnt's own date is 2007.
Less than a year later, on 1 October 2008, NetEnt released Mega Joker, another three-reel slot with a Supermeter mode. Both are covered on our classic slots page.
What changed online?
Because we have no reliable record of Jackpot 2000's rules, we cannot list feature by feature what NetEnt kept or changed. What we can describe is what the online format brought to a classic fruit game:
- A free demo. You can play the official game with play coins before staking anything. Try it on our Jackpot 6000 home page.
- Published figures. NetEnt states the RTP, hit frequency, maximum payout and bet range on its game page, so you can check them before you play.
- Licensing by country. Online, the game is offered by casinos under the gambling rules of each country or state. Read our real money guide for what to check.
- Player protection tools. In Great Britain, for example, licensed gambling businesses must have self-exclusion arrangements, and online sites let you set time and money limits. Our responsible gambling page explains these tools.
The heart of the game is what NetEnt describes on its page: three reels, classic symbols, Jokers and the decision you make after every win. The rules are explained in how to play Jackpot 6000.
